App Review: Slide to Unlock (game)

The creators of Slide to Unlock, The Falco Initiative, have successful taken a frequent task for all iOS users and have turned it into an enjoyable game to play and compete with your friends. They have transformed a message that you see every time to unlock your iOS device, to a simple yet addictive game. There is currently only iPhone and iPod Touch as no iPad version has been released.

The game itself comes with a classic mode where you unlock as quickly as you can to prevent a build-up of 5 different slide-to-unlock bars. The app works with OpenFeint and Game Center an also gives you the option to share your score with others on Facebook and Twitter. As well as social options, the iconic click is played when you slide.

Another great addition to the game is a speed recorder where it tracks how many you unlock, in how many seconds to create an accurate time of how long it takes you to fully slide and unlock your device. Compare your times with friends and make it quicker to unlock your phone.

Overall, it is an addictive game to play whenever you have a minute spare and offers a really good concept which is executed perfectly. However, earlier CoreInfo reported on a rumoured pre-release GM iOS 5.1. A minor feature which was shown was a changed lock screen interface, with the option to slide down and access the camera a permanently available which, if proved true, would change the length of the slide to unlock bar. This would result is the game being forced to update and change but The Falco Initiative would therefore be able to expand the previously limited areas to build up the game.

Even if that was to be the case, it is a fantastic addictive game which I definitely recommend you try out.

Mountain Lion Revealed

In rather unusual circumstances, Apple developers found themselves with a rather unusual package being delivered to them. To everyone’s surprise, it was the preview version of OS X 10.8 aka ‘Mountain Lion’. This move came just in time to steal most of the possible glory from soon-to-be-released Windows 8. This was such a shock as Apple normally announce a new version of the OS at a conference, such as the preview of OS X Lion, however the arrival of OS X Mountain Lion came largely unannounced.

The highlight of the new features to OS X:

-        iMessage – this service recently brought to iOS is revealed for Mac to replace iChat.

-        Reminders – now a separate app, again similarly on iOS, is available to create tasks, view and check off reminders. This spares the previously hidden interface of iCal which was used to manage tasks before.

-        Notes – similar to the iOS Version.

-        Notification centre – pop-up notifications from apps now on your Mac

-        Game Center – a games hub, similar to the iOS app

-        AirPlay mirroring – stream your Mac’s display over the air to an Apple TV

-        Documents in the cloud – an efficient, Apple based iCloud DropBox rival.

To sum up all these fantastic features that will be available for the Mac when Mountain Lion is released in the summer, it is definitely a merging of a very successful OS X with brilliant features from iOS 5. This shows the unifying of two operating systems, which makes sense, as we enter a post-pc era.

Precision and detail is the name of the game for Apple

iPod Touch

When browsing Apple’s website, looking at products which are being showcased, all of these products are matched by majestic, high quality photographs of each item in use. The images sell the product so well that it was believed they were produce of computer imagery.

Today, we learnt that these pictures are a result of Apple’s trait for attention to high detail, a characteristic very much implemented by Steve Jobs. A photographer, Dwight Eschliman, who recently visited Apple’s Photo Studio to take images of the iPod Touch, expressed his Apple experience in his blog.

“The most challenging aspect of shooting store panels for Apple is the balance between the size of the file and the depth of field. Often the products small enough that our depth of field is very narrow. In order for the product to appear entirely in focus, we have to shoot a number of focus zones, which are stitched together in post. “

As well as his images, some very interesting information is included as well. He commented that one single image of the iPod Touch took 54 frames for the device to appear perfectly in focus. That is an insanely high degree of commitment and work for just an image.

The information learnt today most definitely sums up what Apple stands for as a company and puts them ahead of the rest.
